How to Network as a Work-From-Home Mum (When In-Person Events Don't Work)

The easiest way to network as a work-from-home mum is to swap big in-person events for small, regular, online connection that fits your real work windows. Send one thoughtful message a week, comment like a colleague, find one business buddy, join online networking sessions with breakout rooms, know your one-line ask, and use replays when you can't make it live.

Last week I'd organised everything to get to a networking event. Then things changed at home that morning, and I couldn't go.

It wasn't the first time, and if you're a mum building a business or career from home, I'm guessing you’ve faced similar situations.

I know how important networking is. But when working from home with little ones, networking doesn’t happen unless you make it happen. And most of the ways we're told to make it happen are built around a 9-to-5 day.

So here's what actually works when in-person events don't. None of it needs childcare, and most of it takes less than 20 minutes.

Why is networking hard for work-from-home mums?

Most networking assumes you have a free evening, a reliable babysitter, and a predictable day. Breakfast events, after-work drinks, two-hour workshops in the middle of a weekday. If your work happens in early mornings, nap windows, and the hours someone else is home, those times rarely line up.

Then there's the energy. Even when you can get there, you're showing up after a full day of work and parenting, and small talk with strangers is the last thing you've got left for.

Networking is still for you. The usual version just wasn't built with you in mind.

How can you network without going to in-person events?

These six work around nap times and odd hours. Pick one to start with. You don't need all of them.

1. Swap the event for one message a week

Each week, message one person whose work you genuinely like. Mention one specific thing they've shared, then ask one question. It takes five minutes, you can do it from the couch, and it often turns into a real conversation.

2. Comment like a colleague

Pick three to five people in your space and leave a thoughtful comment on their posts. Add something useful or ask a real question rather than an emoji. Do it at the same time each day, like with your morning coffee, and you'll be surprised how quickly people start recognising your name.

3. Find one business buddy

One mum at a similar stage, and a 20-minute call every fortnight. Share what you're working on, what's stuck, and what's next. It's small, but having one person who knows your business well is worth more than a room full of business cards.

4. Go small online

A 200-person webinar is great for learning, but you rarely meet anyone. Look for online sessions with small breakout rooms, where you actually get to talk. Four or five people is the sweet spot.

5. Know your one-line ask

Have a sentence ready: "I'm building ___, and I could really use help with ___." When people know what you need, introductions happen naturally. When they don't, even a great conversation goes nowhere.

6. Treat replays as networking too

Can't make a session live? Watch the recording in a nap window, then message one person who spoke. Tell them what you took from it. That's still a connection, and often a more memorable one.

What should you look for in an online community for mums in business?

Not every group is built for how you work. Look for:

  • Small groups. You want to be known, not lost in a feed of thousands.

  • Flexible timing. Sessions at different times, or recordings when you can't make it live.

  • People at a similar stage. It's easier to help each other when you're facing the same problems.

  • A reason to connect. Intros, buddy calls, or skill swaps beat a group where everyone just promotes themselves.

  • Mums who get it. Nobody blinks if you're interrupted or need to jump off early.

Frequently asked questions

How do work-from-home mums network?

Mostly online, in small and regular ways: thoughtful messages, comments, a business buddy, and small online sessions that fit around nap times. Consistency matters more than big events.

Is online networking as effective as in-person networking for mums?

It can be, if it's small enough to have real conversations. Breakout rooms, buddy calls, and ongoing groups build relationships far better than a one-off webinar.

How much time does networking take as a busy mum?

Less than you'd think. Twenty minutes a few times a week, or about two hours a month in a structured community, is enough to build real connections.

Where can mum entrepreneurs find other mums in business?

Look for small online communities built for mums who work from home, Facebook groups with active discussion, and online sessions with breakout rooms rather than big audiences.

You don't need a free evening or a babysitter to build connections in your business. Start with one of these this week, even if it's just one message.

And if you'd like a place where this is already set up for you, that's exactly why I built the WFH Mama Collective. It's an online membership for mums building a business or career from home, with small monthly Growth Circles, curated intros to other members, and monthly online networking in small breakout rooms. It's about two hours a month, and you come when you can.
